Flame Trap Question

Hi,

Tuneup time is coming up soon.

One of the tuneup items is :

FLAME TRAP.

Could someone advise me on:

-What it does
-replacement interval (? every 60K miles)
-where I can buy it for a good price
-location in the engine, where to find it.

TIA

Flame Trap Question

Not icluded in 98; however, I purchase it and installed it, does not hurt anything.
Replace the "O" ring as well.
Also, follow the vacuum line and make sure is not collapsed or broken, like the one on my 98 V70 was.

Flame Trap Question

There was a bulletin on this indicating to remove the plastic trap part, as it was not needed. My 98 V70 has 98k with no problems. I believe that the 98 did not even have one put in at the factory, but that could be wrong.

Flame Trap Question

Prevents an engine fire/explosion in the event you have a major backfire. You really don't need to replace it, it is simply a plastic disc with lots of holes in it. The need is for it to be cleaned regularily. If it gets plugged you can build pressure in your engine and blow your rear main seal and leak lots of oil...expensive to fix. Check out Volvospeed.com for location. Cleaning it is as simple as spraying some carb cleaner through it until all the gunk is gone...then its as good as new. I usually do it every other oil change while waiting for the oil to drain. It's never been gunked up too bad.

Flame Trap Question

It prevents an explosion in the crankcase should the engine backfire. A turbo engine does not have one. Check volvospeed.com (Bay 13) for photos. It's in the large hose going from the air cleaner to the throttle body, kind of a pain to remove as it's on the back side. PLaces like FCPGroten sell them for $1-2.00. Get your order together of all the other stuff you'll need (filters, plugs, wires, dist cap etc) and order it all at the same time to spread out your shipping cost.
