harsh ride quality in rear of 850 wagon 850

The rear of my 96 850 Turbo wagon is riding very harsh and rough - rattling and clanking, making an uncomfortable driving experience.

I just replaced the rear shocks with new HD Bilsteins. The ride quality got a little better, but not very much. What else could be the problem? Springs?

Thanks in advance!

Patrick

I know it sounds stupid, but I almost didn't buy my current 850 wagon due to a harsh ride. I bought it anyways and started looking, finally I checked the rear tire pressures and they were a little high, brought them back to normal and the car was fine. Just a thought. I couldn't believe how much difference a few pounds made! Keeping the fuel tank full also helps the ride.

Have any modifications been done? Performance springs, heavier sway bar, etc.?

Another thought is the shocks themselves. I put KYBs on the back of my '96 850 sedan and I like their ride quality better than the factory units.

If you have rattles and clunks, then either something is loose and/or there are worn out bushings.

Finally, if the front shocks are worn out you can get some strange effects at the rear of the car.

A thorough examination of all suspension parts is called for.

      John,

No, no mods. It does, however, have low-pro tires on it, which probably contributes to the harshness. But I wouldn't think they would affect the ride that much.

I will check all those things you mentioned. Thanks!

Worn upper shock mounts is the 1st thing to check, should be replaced with the shocks.
