Upper console light replacement V70-XC70 1998

The backlight bulb for my right temperature control dial has gone out. Does anyone know how to access it for replacement?

Thanks,
Kcarl

I just performed this repair on my 97 850, so the procedure should be similar.

1. Purchase the appropriate bulb (mine was PN 3524511 @ ~$6)
2. Pull the temperature control and fan speed knobs off their stems
3. Remove the visible Torx screws (2)
4. Using a small screwdriver or similar instrument, gently pry the square surrounding out, working each corner one at a time
5. Remove the square plastic panel (it's a snug fit)
6. Gently bend back the three tabs holding the printed circuit board and remove it
7. There are two bulbs - one toward the top center and one on the right. The bulbs must be twisted 90 degrees to be removed.

I couldn't confirm the bulb number or type prior to removal, so I left the dash partially disassembled as I brought the old bulb to the dealer to purchase the new one. Brentwood Volvo (St. Louis, MO) sells this bulb for $6.22, and my local dealer sells it for $11.20. Since I needed other parts as well, I ordered everything from Brentwood (have used them several times and remain pleased with prices and service).

Thanks for the reply. I recently tried pulling the knobs off, but they wouldn't budge. I'll give it another try tonight.

One of mine was rather tight as well. Grip tightly and pull firmly, but don't use pliers unless you don't mind damaging the plastic. Also, watch carefully as the knobs come off. They are held on by a small piece of brass that keeps tension between the knob and a flat spot on the shaft. These brass pieces can fall out from the back of the knob and be easily lost.

Tried to remove the 3 dials last nite but had no luck. I'm pulling hard enough that I'm concerned I will break something. I guess I'll have to try using pliers with a rag or just let it go before I make things worse.

Thanks for the input.

They made exterior changes from 97 to 98 and may have done so on the interior as well (mine being a 1997 850). I recommend you speak with someone who has the same year and model. Or try Bay 13: http://www.volvospeed.com/volvo_performance.php
