gas smell, when tank is very full. 850

I figure it must be a gasket around the fuel sending unit or float unit? Any one have this problem? It is not leaking at the tank seems like the recall effects. The dealer said no replacement, but would not look any further unless I pd $85 - the greedy baaaaastaaards!

I just got my tank replaced under the warranty, it sprang a big leak a few months ago. When the tank was down, the service guy said that the fuel pump was leaking, more specifically the wiring that goes into the tank for the pump (part of the whole pump assembly). There is wiring going through some clear sealant and the sealant had broken down and was allowing gas to seep when the tank was full. I opted not to replace the pump at $400 (it works fine), I read that someone who had the same problem put something called "seal all" or something to that effect around the wiring and it solved the problem. (for less than $5)

I'm sure it was some type of RTV sealant or the like. You might have the same issue. I think it should be visible through the bottom of the floor through the access panel.

Good luck.

I had that same problem with my 740... everytime i filled the tank it smelled like gas. after i got my fuel pump replaced, it never happened again, but thats a big chunk of change just to make the gas smell go away...

I have a 97 850 and experienced some gas leakage recently. Looked up the NHTSA web site and found a safety recall for the gas tank and the bushings around the heat shield. The original safety recall was for southern states. There is now a service recall for 33 states and the district of columbia for the same problem. You should receive a letter unless you are not the original owner. In which case, call Volvo (go to their website). I called because I was not the original owner and they called me back the following day, left a message with a name and number in case I had any problems with the dealer. If you don't see any gas (put a piece of paper behind the right rear tire) and just smell it, you may still have a small leak around the bushings. I'm told that a gas tank leak is seen behind the left wheel???

anyone know any more on this subject?

I took it to the dealer and they installed those bushings. they said the leak was from the top and they did not have to pull the tank or look any further per the recall instructions. I am hoping it is just the gasket as I bought both. I need a new dealer but we only have one for 60 miles.
