Timing belt @ 30k miles? 850

I have a 1997 850 T5 wagon. It has 30k miles. I performed the 30k service myself.
Took it in for the gas tank recall and the dealer is recommending replacing the timing belt (7 years old).

Anyone have experience with the belt deteriorating over 7 years...or is mileage a better gauge than age?

Thanks for your input Volvo people.

recomendation is 80k or 8 years..your dealer is correct

and given the alternative (if it breaks) why are you even thinking about this?

I was not aware of the 7-8 year recommendation and wanted to verify on this board.
I am going to have it done.. I agree, much better than the alternative.

I called around to several Volvo dealers and all of them are ~$300 for the job.

      Doing the serpentine, too.

      Thanks for the input!

My indy shop is about $200 for a t-belt change.

And yes - after 7 years you should do timing belt & accessory belt too!

Time is as big a factor in belts as use. Don't wait - the engine you save might be yours! (but if your dealer want over $300 look around!)

    Rubber deteriorates with time 850

Recommendation from the book is 70-80K or 5 years.

Up to you. If you can do it yourself volvospeed.com then the belt is only $40.00
The labor is yours. Not that hard. I just did it myself.

Not comfortable? then let dealer do it. A fair charge is 3 hours of labor.

I only know that mine was replaced at about 70K. That is about the normal number miles recommendation for changing the timing belt. But, they usually have more miles on them at 7 yrs than 30K, maybe there is something about age that would warrant replacing it. I understand that it could be a more expensive repair if the timing belt were to go before you had a chance to replace it. I know this isn't very helpful to you so I hope someone else will know the real answer for you.

Thanks...no problem. As you mention, I've read about the potential damage and it certainly concerns me.
