Rear Speakers 850 1996

The rear speakers just went out. Any suggestions (connectors/fuses/etc.) or do I have to bite the bullet and get new speakers?

Thanks in advance.

I have the same problem in the 850 wagon. Noot only are both rear door speakers out, but the starboard side rear-pillar tweeter is out, too. I find it unlikely that they would have blown to such an extent that they don't work at all, but that seems to be the case. If I turn up the radio all the way, one of the door speakes temporarily comes back on, albeit crappily. Unless of course the problem lies in the connections at the radio.

So here's the question:

The radio claims to have this anti theft thing... If I take it out and unplug it does that deem it useless? How can I get around this?

Thanks!

The rear speakers were not working in my car when I bought it. Turns out the glue that holds the small tweeter to the bridge that runs across the woofer face had failed, and the tweeters had fallen down into the main cone on both speakers. I was surprised that the magnetic force didn't cause the woofer cones to rip, but they looked OK. I re-glued the tweeters to the bridge using some high temp silicone and they have been fine since. I doubt that this may have happened at the exact same time for both of your speakers, but it's worth a look. Are you sure they both failed simultaneously, or did one possibly go and you just didn't notice it, and now that they are both gone you have?

Yeah, its entirely possible that I didn't notice that one of the speakers had already gone out. I'll have to check for the wires on the speaker. I'm just surprised - aren't there small door speakers that should be working as well?

Yep, there are rear door speakers as well. If those are working in your car I would look at the rear shelf speakers themselves. If they don't, then it might be a wiring issue for the entire set of rear channels or something internal with the stereo. I have an aftermarket stereo in my TR6 that the fader control is shot on, sound will only come on if the fader is turned all the way to the front. Fortunately I only have one set of speakers in the car, so I have them wired to the front channels.

Don't forget to look in the trunk, under the speakers. A wire may be loose. There are no fuses for the speakers.

Rob,
It's unlikely they are BOTH damaged and as a result, not working. Has the "fader" been accidently shifted to the front speakers only? If not, remove the radio, clean the multipin contacts and re-seat. I'm betting it's nothing more then a dis-connect.

Hi Rob,
If both went out it is probably wiring, or your radio/receiver and not
your speakers.
Wagon or sedan???

No - unless the fader isn't working at all. When I fade to the front I have sound. When I fade to the back - zilch. I have the sedan and its the rear-shelf speakers.

If I pull the unit out will the contacts be obvious that I should clean?

Thanks in advance,

Rob
