Inside door handle stuck (Part 2) - 1998 S70

Hi again,

Just had an oil change at the dealer and they checked the stuck front passenger inside door handle. They said it was a broken 'inside door handle cable' and the cable was around $13 but requires 1.5 hrs of labor to install -- around $140 total installed.

Has anyone replaced a door handle cable before? Just curious if it really takes this long to replace the cable. I am leaning towards probably doing it myself.

TIA

If you do it yourself, you will save $130. Cheap dealer rate, btw. You also will save yourself $13 for the part, there are no cables. Linkage, yes, and it probably slipped apart. I haven't had the door panel off my v70 yet, but all of my other cars. Figure about 3 hours for a first time. Just don't force anything. The plastic pins holding the pannel to the metal tend to break.
Once the panel is off, you will see the obvious problem.

    Merry Christmas,
    Klaus

There is a cable between the interior door handle and the door lock. However, I don't think it can be replaced independently of the door lock mechanism. I say this because I recently replaced one of these door lock mechansims due to a problem with the central locking system on my '98 V70, and the cable came as part of the door lock, and didn't look like it could be separated from it. I might be wrong - presumably the dealer knows better than me, right?

I'd recommend that you open up the door to see if you can see what the problem is before buying any parts. Like Klaus said, it's quite possibly just a linkage rod popped out of place. It's certainly more likely than the cable breaking. If you do have to buy any parts, also get a handful of those little plastic fasteners used to hold the interior door panel in place - they tend to break fairly easily when pulling the panel off.

        Daire,

Just curious, say it was indeed the cable, do you think it will take a tech 1.5 hours to replace it? I might be wrong, and I haven't removed a door panel before, but it seems to me that this is only a 30-minute job for the tech.

Sorry for the delay getting back to you... holidays and all that...

It took me probably an hour and a half to open up the door and replace the lock mechanism (which, as I mentioned, includes the cable to the interior door handle), and close it up again. That was my first time opening up a door on this car, and I was moving slowly to avoid damaging anything. I would think a pro could do it a lot quicker.

Any follow-up from you? Did you determine what the cause was?

          -Daire

If I had a garage I probably would have tried to fix it. With the winter season here in New England I decided to have the dealer fix it -- too cold outside for me. I am hoping it would be a quick job.

            Thanks.

      Klaus,

When you say the linkage probably slipped apart are you saying nothing was broken in the first place?

Thanks and Merry Christmas to you, too.
