Ok .... So I bought the 850 below ..... 850

and so I looked in the glove box , and the records have been kept up until 2003 jan . After that they just havent changed the oil .... at all ....

I changed the oil , b;ack as night , put 6 quarts in it , ran it for 10 min , pulled stick and it looked like i never changed it .

Changed it again , and now its better looking when i pull the stick , but I will change it again in a week .

I didnt see any sludge in the top end , just really dirty oil . So Im thinking all the poor thing needs is a little lovin and it might be happy again .

QUESTION ..... how do i turn off the SERVICE light ? Im guessing its just on because it wanted an oil change ?

1996 850 T

Oh and I went to change the trans oil , man they put those torx bolts in a tight spot ! Is there a trick im not knowing ? I didnt study it long , just glanced and said nawwww not today . Im going to add Mercon/Dextron 111 .... right ?

According to my info on some '96 models there is a service reset button on the dash display. Look near the trip reset button to see if there's a small rubber plug. Remove the plug and turn the ignition on. Stick a thin device through the opening and push on the reset switch pin. This should reset the service light.

This girl at work had a Renault Alliance. One day her car won't start. With about 65,000 miles on it she had never changed the oil. If a car that was trash to start with can last that long before officially becoming trash, an 850 can miss a few changes and still be a great car!

    Good Luck!!

96-97 850s and 98 SV70s all have similar electronics and require 1.) the reset tool ($178 from IPD) 2.) the dealer 3.) remove the bulb or 4.) an 8mm piece of 3M black electrical tape placed over the light ($1.39, Home Depot). (Guess which one I chose!)

It should go out after 2 minutes anyway. Seriously, good luck with your purchase!

if it is a 94 or older 850 you reset the service light by entering a code in the little diagnostic boxes near the washer resivoir.

Yeah the tranny fluid is changed by flushing it out via the cooler return line. Should be changed every 25k miles since there's no filter. I installed a Magnefine 3/8" inline filter in the return line too. You can get a Service Light reset tool for the '96-'98 850 online for about $50, usually from England. Draper is the maker of the tool.

You can also get one from IPD for a little more money.

Forget the service light! It will go out on its own after a few minutes. It's just a nuisance to anyone who keeps his own service records.

And flusing the tranny per the other post is simple, no torx bolts to remove and can be done in about 20 minutes. I use Mobil 1 ATF, highly recommended. Use Mobil 1 oil also.

You need to visit volvospeed.com (Bay13) for maintenance instructions and good guidance.

Hold off on the auto tranny flush until you catch up on some reading. No need to take any torx nuts off for a tranny flush.

IPD sells a kit for the tranny flush. It's not really necessary- I've done it twice with a clear hose and bucket and about 14 quarts of Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF (the recommended way to go). In your case , flush with dyno atf the first time and run a week or two - then flush again with the Mobil1 syn ATF.

    Happy Holidays !

Volvospeed is run by a master volvo tech - he really knows and shares.

This site has saved me thousands of dollars by providing guidance on DIY repairs and maintenance.

IMPORTANT : When was timing belt last changed ? If you cannot determine - replace it ASAP. The Volvo engine will self destruct if the belt fails.

The T-Belt should be replaced every 70K miles or every 7 years regardless of mileage.

Volvospeed's instruction for T-Belt replacement is very good - I followed them without problem.

the sticker from the volvo dealer says belt exchanged in 2001 ..... 75,000 miles now has 115,000

I will pull the top cover and inspect it for cracks .
