whats the point of plating a rotor?

I have a dumb question for you guys. I am a mechanic myself, but have never heard a good answer for my question. Whats the point of cadmium plating a brake rotor if a brake pad is just going to wear that surface out? IS plating for people who live in humid or wet environments where road salts might rust away whats not plated? I can't see it any other way. Am i wrong?

Juan

    Plating a rotor? Why?

Also being a tech, WHO's doing this? I've never heard of it AND yes, makes no sense to me either.

      Plating a rotor? Why?

Some rotors come plated so they won't rust in storage before installation. Simple and no coating to wash off.

        On new rotors?

OK, seen that and it looks like a galvanized type coating material. Is THAT what he's talking about?

whats the point of plating a rotor?

When I was in the navy, new people were sometimes sent for 10 fathoms of water line, or relative bearing grease. Could this be a similiar thing?
