14 mpg!! 850

Hello,
I am running 14mpg combined ( NO AC)??!! newly changed oil, plugs, cleaned injectors(S1 fuel additive injector cleaner), cleaned MAF connectors, new air filter, O2 sensors ok - no codes, the only thing left is to change the fuel filter w/c was done 2 years ago and the fuel regulator. I think my mixture is too rich since i smell fumes during the cold start moreso the onset of SO.CAL winter.( LA, Calif weather no snow?)
thanks a lot!
94 850 wagon Non Turbo, 188K miles, rebuilt tranny,

I didn't see tire pressure listed. Kinda obvious, but worth mentioning since it can cause 3-4 mpg difference.

WIth 188k it might be time for a compression check. If you've got good compression 14 mpg is obviously a sign that something is wrong - probably the fuel mixture as you've surmised.

I assume you are NOT using the built in MPG meter in the dash. This device is sort of inaccurate, you're best off dividing miles between fill ups by gallons used.

Coolant temp will greatly affect a/f ratio. Make sure the ecu is seeing appropriate temps. Also make sure the fuel pressure regulator's diaphraghm isn't perforated and leaking gas into the vacuum hose attached to it. A bad MAF will also greatly affect A/f ratio, but if it was way off, the engine may not even run.

DOes the engine run rough at all? If so, try disconnecting the coolant temp sensor withthe engine running to see if it smoothes out.

FYI I just drove my 850 turbo from LA to Phoenix and back, loaded with 3 adults 2 kids and luggage and got about 22 MPG.

Juan

Juan,
Appreciate the info. Yes i do checking manually not the computer since mine is giving BS readings...We'll check the fuel regulator and temp sensor. I have a tick sound as well in the cold start. i used to run 26mpg on fwy but when i shifted to 10w/40 high mileage oil and cleaned the EGR/flame trap etc, my gas mileage became worst. Tried to check if i missed something but to no avail..
Gracias
Cesar

Both of those mileage stats seem low. I get 19-20 in the city, and 26 on trips fairly easy. I drive about 85 on the trips. 97 turbo. I calculate by gals used and miles run.
