The stuck glovebox has happened 850

Hello,

I know its a common problem and previous posts have suggested using a hacksaw blade to saw off the hook but I can't seem to prise the gap open far enough to see the hook. Has anyone got another way? I was gonna whizz off the hinges with a small rotary cutter but these aren't available as a apare part by themselves. I've heard of another way which is to drill a hole just above the lock barrel to get to the rod that opens the latch... has anyone any details please? Or anyone have any other suggestions?

It happened to me about a year ago. I was a little leary about prying the door open to make a big enough gap too, but it's pretty flexible. You can get it pried open pretty good without breaking it. I used the biggest screwdriver I could find and made a big gap, then stuck the hacksaw blade in and cut. It only takes a few minutes of cutting. Important to tape up the door as Klaus says because the blade will burr the leather (I have proof!).

It really is the best option over cutting the hinges.

Glovebox - I still cant do it. The gap is too tight. 850

No way. Theres no gap and when I force the lid down, it gives a bit at the two top corners but the top middle where the catch is nevers gives even a bit. Cant even see the catch. Theres a step all around which is the glovebox liner which stops me seeing anything....do you have to crack this to get to the catch? If I use a big screwdriver the sorrounding dash ie the airbag cover will be ruined. When I get time I'm gonna try get a complete lid from the scrapyard and then whizz off the hinges coz I just cant think of another way.

What you will be cutting with a hacksaw blade is not the hook, but the U shaped bracket which holds the catch. Put tape on the outside of the box so the hacksaw doesn't rub against it. You will only be able to use the blade itself, the saw won't fit. Patience, and it can be cut.

What's the suggested latching solution once you get it open? Velcro?

I tried that, but that's not the solution (even with velcro it the door will eventually fall). Go to your Volvo dealer and they'll sell you just the parts you need to replace the piece you cut as well as the locking mechanism so it doesn't get stuck again. Good luck!
