Metal Noise from Rear Wheels S40-V40 2000

While driving my mom's S40 today, I discovered that a metal-on-metal noise is much worse than I had originally thought. I noticed it when I leaned up against the S40 while it was parked and it rolled back a bit, producing a sharp metal scraping sound from the right rear wheel.

Driving the car today, it seems that the noises now come from both rear wheels and continue even at speed. I was driving around my neighborhood at about 20 mph with the windows down, and I could definitely hear a metallic noise almost like a sprinkler or running faucet, but that was coming from the rear wheels.

I would guess the problem has to do with the brakes/rotors, and probably is because something is not retracting properly when the brake pedal is released. Does anyone have any guesses as to what is causing the noise, and is this a problem that needs to be addressed immediately?

Metal Noise from Rear Wheels S40-V40 2000

I had a similar experience with my other car that went away on its own after driving a few blocks. It's a horrible noise. I asked around and people said it was because some bit of dirt or debris got stuck between the rotor and brake pad. Somehow it dislodged itself and the noise went away on its own. You might try going over some bumps or something to dislodge anything trapped between the rotor and brake pad. I don't know if this is your problem, but it sounds very similar.

It could be the rear wheel bearings going.
Try getting a firm grip on the top of rear wheels and see if there is any play in the bearings when you pull firmly outwards.
Ideally the car should be jacked up.there should be no play at all in the bearings.
