leaking oil gasket on 00 S70 GLT SE S70

For months my gaz milage was bad. Now, I am told that my oil pan gasket is leaking. The mechanic is telling me that to replace that part will take about 10-11 hours of work in addition to parts. I am wondering what does the oil pan gasket is made of, how long should it really take to replace, and what parts should be replaced. Perhaps, if i knew that parts to replace, I would get them of the internet cheaper.
Your input is much appreciated.

I do not believe that the leaking oil pan or gasket is the cause of my poor milegae, but who knows. Now my wife is driving the car mostly on the highway and the milege is about 19.5 per galon. We only put in 92 or better gaz in the car. There are no codes in the car.
As far as leaking oil I am not sure what is affected by this. This leak could be affecting what and in what way. As far as the air or oil filter those are new and should not really produce any problems.
As always, your input is much appreciated.

Like the others, I too find that odd. If the pan gasket material is the source of the leak (VERY rare btw but not impossible), then it's only about a 3 hour job (NOT 11) to R&R the oil pan. A cracked oil pan, from damage if so, should be replaced (same labor).
On the other hand, a leaking rear engine seal (crank seal) is a 10 hour job, even more if AWD.

Oil leaks have nothing to do with mileage and yes, get another opinion and preferably from someone very experienced with newer Volvos.

Dennis, John is right, find a new mechanic. If your oil pan gasket is leaking because you drove through one of those famous Brooklyn street repair spots and hit a manhole, I would believe the mechanic. But when he said 10-11 hours of work, go elsewhere. It is a hard job and you cannot do it, but these things seldom leak. Your oil leak is coming from some where above the oil pan, probably one of the gaskets above on the side of the motor.
If you are only getting 14-16 mpg around town, try using 93 octain for a tank or 2. Without a check engine light on we can only assume your air filter is clogged, you drive in first gear a lot, your right foot is always on the floor, your left foot is always on the brake, etc.

I don't understand what bad gas mileage has to do with a leaking oil pan.

Fixing the oil pan will not improve your gas mileage. Get a second opinion.
