S70 FWD phantom shift problem S70 2000

I have a strange thing happening with my 2000 S70 FWD automatic tranny. Every now and then the unit doesn't want to shift into 2nd gear. It happened once a week ago then it happened again today. It is a very short duration anomaly. Today it occurred after initial acceleration from a dead stop. During this 1 to 2 second period the transmission would not shift. RPM jumped as if in neutral, then it caught and ran fine the rest of the trip. Tranny fluid level is only slightly low (maybe 1/2 pint) with unit hot and in park. Is this enough to cause problem? I get no dash indicator lights. Haven't read codes yet as my reader has not arrived. The car may run fine for two weeks then it will happen. 53,000 miles. Any thoughts?

If this is the 5 speed auto - there was a tech paper circulated to dealership concerning "shift flare" - involved a software upgrade and reset. If this has already been done, and a software reset (removing learned values based on driving styles) does not fix - and oil level is topped up to full level - most shops will want you to spring for a new transmission.

    OUCH!!
