Problem after odometer gear repair 850

I changed out my odometer gear and I thought everything went great. However, it has been several days since the repair and this morning was the first time that I had driven it in the dark. The LCD information center works, but it does not light up when the lights are on. Before I tear out the cluster again, can someone tell me what I need to look for. I don't recall any light connector for the LCD info center.

Thanks,
Bobby

You don't say what year your 850 is but I have a 97 that I just did the gear replacement on and if I had been smart I would have removed the "service light" while I had the cluster out. I won't pay $180 for a tool to clear that stupid light!! Apparently the 96 and 97 are the only two that you need a special tool to clear it. If you do have to go back in remove the service light and put a piece of tape on the back to cover the hole.

Mine is a 95 Turbo, so I can reset the service light without a tool.

Thanks,
Bobby

The small light bulb located behind the display was likely bumped during your repair.

Spare bulbs can be purchased at the dealership, and the cluster does not need to be disassembled to access it (just remove as you did for the odo replacement).

I cut aluminum replacement gears for the first two odo's I repaired (took a while), so I am glad there are more commercially available gears hitting the market. The last odo gear I replaced was one of the plastic replacement gears, and I had the same problem with the trip computer bulb that time.

P.S. Clearing the trip odo while the vehicle is moving is a good way to stress the gear and cause premature failure.

One thing I've noticed is that older bulbs don't like to be jiggled much. Whenever you take out the instrument cluster for repairs, it's a good idea to replace all of your illumination bulbs (yours should have 6, 4 for the speedometer/gauges and 2 for your trip computer). When I replaced my odometer gear, I noticed that one of my gauge lights went out. I would recommend replacing those six gauge lights, and then set your dimmer to 80% or so brightness. Your bulbs should last a lot longer that way.

Thanks for the info. I'll get some new bulbs and replace all of them. As I recall there are a couple of small bulbs and 4 of the larger bulbs.

Thanks,
Bobby
