S80 2.9L thermostat replacement--is this a joke played on all of us? S80 2001

My '01 S80 is displaying all of the classic thermostat failure symptoms--slow to reach operating temp and decreasing fuel economy.

Just how are you supposed to reach the housing to remove and replace it? Do you really have to pull off the power steering pump (and the alternator?) to even get at the lower torx bolt. WTF???? Who designs this stuff?

Hopefully, I'm looking at the wrong place, but any hints would be welcome.

Anyone with detailed instructions/hints to get this job done? A tstat r&r is a easy job on any other vehicle I've ever had the pleasure of owning.

You are looking in the wrong place. The t-stat is behind the timing belt upper cover sandwhiched in between the camshaft pulleys. You will see the temp sender in a housing behind the tstat front cover. It is not all that hard to change.
