1999 V70XC with 113000k miles is making a clunking sound when I hit potholes and other rough spots on the road. Seems to be getting worse and seems to be coming from front drivers side. Any idea what it is? Bad strut, control arm bushing, etc?

I was hoping perhaps someone else has solved a similar puzzle and I could benefit from their experience.

I'd bet it's your sway bar links. I have a '99 XC with just over 90K miles and have had to replace them four times (the first time with only 16K on the car). It's been very frustrating... but I'm getting very familiar with the sound & symptoms. Another possiblity is the tie rod ends. I've had to replace them too, but it caused not only a sound but also a pulling in the steering at hwy speeds. Another disappointment on a an expensive car.

Also look/check into the sway bar end links. At 85,000 my XC links were toast. Easy to check; if you grab the lower end (easier to reach) they will swivel pretty easy, maybe even wiggle in/out like mine did. Easy fix, go online and pat $28.00 each and pop the new ones in. Slim wrench will hold the ball ends from spinning. After the replacement, it is sooooooo nice. Check it out..

Is there a place I can buy these parts online? I prefer to do the work myself and avoid the dealer at all costs.

Noise "sounds" similar to what our 2000 XC70SE had and it just turned 99,000 miles. We had to have the spring seats / strut tops replaced, they were broken. Dealer did repair, parts were $74 but labor was $240.

Most likely the front upper strut mount...they go easily on these cars. the metal separates from the rubber and starts knocking around. At this mileage, your ball joints (control arms) are probably history too, that would be a knocking sound especially when turning at very low speed.
