Horn contacts, replace entire steering wheel? S70

I've got a '98 S70 with 112k, and last week the horn started honking uncontrollably, especially when I turn the wheel. Took it into my local import mechanic who disabled the horn temporarily, says the only fix is to replace the entire steering wheel with a new one.

He's ordered the part, but I'm wondering if this $500+ job is the only or best way to handle it? Suggestions?

Am I getting hosed? Let me know.

If you are handy, I would try cleaning up the contacts and rebending teh contact springs (that worked for me on 965). If that doesn't work, Volvo does not sell the parts separately so a new wheel is the only new part choice. However, all you need is the wheel from a recent wreck, minus the expensive air bag ( just have your own moved over). Without the bag, I'd be suprised if you had to pay as much as $100 for an excellent used wheel, and you might find a fancy one you like better from one of teh upscale interiors like recent C70's (just be sure the air bag fits opening). If you can get to a pick and pull yard with the right Volvo, you might even be able to pull the horn contacts from back of wheel - they do come off, just not sold separately.

There are other, cheaper, strategies, try the Brickboard "search" function in the pulldown menu above (if/when it's working!) I recall there are at least 2 contacts and one "fix" involves extracting the broken contact pieces. (Sorry but the search function isn't working for me.)

Also, there must be TONS of used SVC steering wheels around at the Volvo parts recyclers. eg. http://www.erievovo.com/
