Burning Oil- How much is too much? 850 1994

I have 140,000 mile and have been buring oil for the last several years but its up to about a quart each 500 miles. Have changed it regularly each 3000 mile but not with synthetic. Afraid to use sythetic after all these years. My flame trap is cleaned regularly and car engine runs fine. Just wondering if its time to sell?

    Burning Oil- How much is too much? 850 1996

    I have a 1996 850 with 210,000 miles and it started burning oil in the last 10,000 miles. A switch to "high-mileage" oil (Quaker State, if I remember correctly) noticably slowed the oil loss -- much to my surprise. Before that it "never burned a drop" and I did nothing special, just regular maintenance.

    Switching to a heavier oil will slow down the consumption, but if you live in Minnesota, your oil will be too heavy to start the car! Get a compression test and ask a mechanic if it is the rings ($$$$) or the valve guides ($$$).
    BTW, if you 'sell' it, are you going to tell the next person looking for a bargain that he/she will need to fix it?

        NMI=no message inside.

        Try using some Marvel mystery oil additive and a heavier oil to minimize oil burning and see what happens
