temporary spare 850 1994

Can any one tell me where I can get a replacement donut spare tire for my 850? The rim is good but I will replace the whole mess if I must. I doubt a full size will fit in the well or I would prefer to ditch the thing.
Thanks
Gjackson

I would seriously ditch that crappy donut spare, they are flat out dangerous. Mine exploded in the trunk when it was two years old, never used. I called TireRack and ordered a replacement steel rim and Khumo tire assembled for about $150 (205/50-16). Just call them or go to TireRack.com and order the same size tire that's on your car now. Then there will be no hazard in the trunk and no speed restriction if you ever have to use it on the side of the road one rainy night. If you're in doubt about the fit take a tape measure and measure across the narrowest part of the spare well in the trunk and tell TireRack that's the biggest diameter tire you can fit in there. They'll set you up.

I bought a new full size tire and steel wheel from Discount Tire (www.tires.com). I bought the lowest priced tire that they had. It fits fine in the spare tire well in my '95 850 - I believe there is a plastic or styrofoam spacer that you can take out to accomodate the extra width of a full size tire. If you are only going to use it as a spare you would be okay to select one of their lower priced tires. I notice that you can get a Nitto tire for $43 and a new steel wheel is also $43. They mount and balance it for free, just pay the shipping. Be careful with buying a used tire as you don't know how old it is and what type of abuse it may have been exposed to. You can also check at The Tire Rack but I think they have sold out of steel wheels for this season.

Ditch it. A full size rim/tire will fit. Check Ebay for a single that matches with what you already have.

I have a full size 205/55/16 spare in my '98 Volvo's spare tire well.

On another car that I run winter tires I just swap a winter and summer tire so I'll have a full-size spare at all times.

If you must, the dougnut spares must be no more than a few bucks on e-bay or erie vovo parts.

Bought one from a volvo scrap place for $38. Looks brand new. Old one mysteriously appeared exploded in wheel well with separated tread eventhough never used. Funny thing is, it was fine prior to a dealer visit - exchanged by those highly ethical dealer people? Nah! people don't do such things, do they?
