Some advice on buying a S70 S70

Hi-
I'm thinking of buying a S70 and would like some advice.
I know I want a turbo so its going to be a GLT or T-5.

What I want to know is which year is more reliable?

I've heard that the electronics are what gives people problems, I can live with this, however I haven't heard about the engine/transmition reliablility.

Is the mannual more durable than the auto? Or is it more of a personal prefreance?

Thanks for any advice you have.

Dempsey

Buy a 1998...I've sunk over $2000.00 into my 1999, still love it but my wallet keeps losing money.

Do a search on ETS on this forum. Volvo started ETS, on S70, starting '99 or '00. If you decide to get one with ETS, verify that it has already been changed.

They both have been reliable.I prefer the T-5 because they have better performance. The engines and turbos seem to last forever provided you change engine oil at at least the recommended intravals. The transmissions are by far the weakest link (automatics)because there was no recommended oil changes.I have found that customers that regulary flush the trans fluid say ever 40k miles do not seem to have near the failure rate than the ones that let the fluid go until it is black.Personallty I do perfer the autos because I live in an area with a lot of traffic and having driven a stick for years I got sick and tired of it in long jams.As far as electronics go the only thing that seems to give out a lot are the a.b.s. control modules and there is a link on this website where you can have them repaired much cheaper than buying them new.

If you want a turbo it must be a T5. The GLT has a light pressure turbo to get the bhp up to around 200. Not too much of a punch. The engine on a T5 is the 2.3L with around 240bhp, lots of torque at about 3500 rpm.
The tranny is just preference, the auto was made better in 1997 with the inclusion of a filter in the pan - still should flush it once in a while. The best thing you can do is find someone whom you can trust to buy it from and make sure it has a maint history.

Klaus,

It's true the T5 is a screamer.

The LPT provides a decent kick for everyday driving and never seems to run out of breath.
