Fuel Pump replacement - how? supplier? 850 1997

Vehicle: 1997 855 T AWD, manual transmission, 212K km.

The shop diagnosed the non-starting problem as a bad (main)fuel pump. Diagnosis was made by disconnecting the hose and noting the (lack of) pressure at the discharge of the pump. They assess that the pre-pump is working properly. I am told that they need to drop the tank (7.5 h) and then replace the pump. They recommend replacing both the main (~$900) and pre-pump ($570) while the tank is down. The cost for the total job is > $2K .

On this vehicle, is there no way to get at the pump from the interior?
Should the pre-pump be replaced?
Is there a lower cost pump than that provided by Volvo dealer?
What is possiblity of adding an external pump?

Unless they changed the design on the 97', this dealer is full of you know what. As mentioned in the previous post, the fuel pump is located underneath the rear seat/trunk area and is quickly accessible.

I replaced the fuel pump in my 95' 855T in approximately 45 min. If you have the third row seat, you need to remove the third row seat "back" in order to properly access the fuel pump panel. Easy DIY. Good luck!

By the way, I chose to replace the entire fuel pump but some people have indicated that they have had success by purchasing the "insert" only and then wiring it in.

No need to remove fuel tank. Access is under the front floor panel in the luggage area, the rear most access cover. The front access cover is the sender unit. Tell your mechanics this is DIY project and should only take 30 minutes :)

I just had a look at the installation from the holes in the luggage area. The fuel pump is not there. It is burried somwhere beneath the floor. According to the manual it is in the rear side of the tank. The 850 AWD has a tank with a raised middle where the driveshaft goes beneath it. Apparently there is also a second pump to transfer the fuel from the left fuel tank portion to the main pump on the right. Further, it seems that they must drop the driveshaft and differential to get to the tank.

Have you actually looked for the fuel pump in yours? I'm thinking of searching for a wrecked later model V70 AWD or XC for parts...
