1996 855R turbo swap 850 1996

Hi everyone!
I looked through the archives about this topic but can't seem to find it since this was discussed a long time ago.
My 1996 855R's turbo has a bent compressor blade and since it is going to be overhauled can I install the next larger turbo from say a 98 v70R and get more performance? Will the ECU "see" this and compensate so as to not make any difference as compared to the stock unit?
Thanks in advance,
klaus

Klaus,

This would bear some investigation, but in answer to your question, "will I get more performance?", my answer is: I truly don't think the added "top end oomph" would be worth it. Basically, you already have a slightly bigger bore, and isn't the only difference in the bore between the two something like 2mm? Also, I believe you already have a T3 on a 96R model, which already has high flow rate and a good (50 I think) trim. Incidentally a T3 will handle 300bhp easily, and without some other significant mods, you're not gonna get there! Also, by increasing the bore, it takes a little longer to spool up, but gives you more potential power because of less restriction. The ECU is what gives you the immediate change in "off the line response" and since you have the "R" already, you have the factory ECU upgrade. Most of us want "off the line" performance. I don't think this will give it to you.

In answer to your question, "will the ECU pick up on the change over to the other turbo and modify accordingly?" I dunno, but I don't think so. However, the other klaus below may know more than I on this one. The way I see it, the turbo charger is a mechanical part, nothing electronic there. The Turbo Control Valve is a solenoid controller, not a stepping motor controller. Stepping motors constantly cycle so that the wastegate actuator maintains boost. Solenoids are either open or closed, so it keeps the wastegate closed until the max boost pressure is achieved and then it bleeds off the excess all at once. Obviously with a bigger bore, it will take more air, with less restriction, so pressure shouldn't, in theory, be a problem. Since the pressure will be vented, map sensors and the like won't recognize anything different; ranges will still be ranges, the numbers may be higher but the range will be the same. Therefore, I don't really see where electronics come in to play. If I'm wrong and/or terribly misguided, please, someone, enlighten me.

However, if you really want faster, and you are replacing the turbo anyway, and you are willing to lay out appx $600.00 more, the true upgrade would be a turbo that spools faster and/or smoother. Try investigating turbos with lighter, tighter, smaller impellers, that give you a step up in trim, and/or ceramic ball bearings turbos that are touted to spool up 40% faster.

So...there you have it...more opinionated shinola from me,

Chris

Hey there Chris and Klaus,
Thanks very much for the input, it's really appreciated!
The way I'm looking at it is that if I have to have the turbo repaired now and further down the road I'm looking at chipping and exhaust etc, will it all work together.
I think what I'll do is have the stock turbo repaired and if possible, improved and then just do the tried and true method of performance add on's.
I thought if upgraded turbo's were an option I'd kill 2 birds with one stone.
Right now a wagon with 250 horses catches peoples by surprise hahaha it would be nice to have just a little more oomph!
Thanks again for the input guys,
klaus D.

Your 855 has 222 bhp, the 1998 R has 236. Not much of a boost difference. The ECU will need to be upgraded. I don't know if the two years are plug and play to install.
