TRACS OFF Switch V70 AWD 1998 V70-XC70

Hello:

Pressing this switch doesn't seem to have any effect on my V70 AWD 1998. No LED is coming on, and no indicator in the control panel appears. I had occasion to check out at a dealership that TRACS and ABS are functioning. Also, the ABS and TRACS OFF lights on the control panel, don't they turn on like most other indicator and warning lights when the ignition key is turned to that particular position where all the other lights turn on?

Anyone out there with a 1998 V70 AWD, can you please post a line on whether TRACS OFF switch functions for you, and whether or not the ABS and TRACS warning lights turn on along with the other lights?

Thanks,
ckkrish

The TRACS is an electronic traction control device. When you push the button to activate nothing will happen until you are in a situation. It works in conjunction with the ABS system. When you car goes into a skid, TRACS system will activate the ABS on one side of the car. This will help keep the car going straight. If you don't feel comfortable with your car taking over control then you can leave it off.

I don't have an AWD but do have a 98 S70. The ABS light on the dash should indeed light up briefly and then go out after turning the key on. I you do not see it light at all, the module may be faulty. However, normally if the module is not functioning correctly - it will light up all the time. It sounds as if you do have a problem - I am just wondering if possibly the light bulb to the ABS light in the dash is out or disconnected. Have you had the car awhile? Have you purposely tried to activate your anti lock brakes and know if the work? Can easily do this on dirt, water, or ice - just be carefull. Hope this helps, TB

I have had the car for about three months. The car skid on snow last month. When I got off the highway I found a Volvo dealership right next to the hotel I was checking in. I had the ABS and traction control examined by them and they reported that both are working fine. They asked if the warning lights are on and I asked them to look beyond the fact that there is no warning light, as I am not sure if the warning lights are functional and/or ABS/TRACS is functioning properly. They test drove the car and reported ABS&TRACS are working properly. I didn't get the time follow up on the correct functioning of the warning lights.

Occasionally I experience some pulsations when applying brake at low speed, esp. in the morning first drive. I had heard that the pulsations are the self tests of the ABS module. But as I am not very experienced in these matters my readings could be wrong.

      Thanks for your response.

If the tracs and ABS lights do not come on when you turn the key to on, the lights are probably burned out. Some owners just don't care or pull the wires off the bulbs so they aren't reminded to bring the car in for service.
You will have to lift the dash up, fairly easy to do on a 70, and check the back of the dash.
You are right about the self test of the ABS after the first start up, at about 17-18 mph it checks the abs system. If the ABS system did have problems earlier, then check the rear brake pads, they may be really thin and need to be replaced.

The brake pads are in very good condition. That being eliminated, probably it is just the malfunctioning lights. I will get the ABS & TRACS OFF lights examined. All other lights are working fine.

          Thanks for your help.
