HIGHWAY FUEL MILEAGE SURVEY S70

Hello everyone,

Just a quick survey. Government data says 29 mpg for highway driving:

http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/noframes/14374.shtml

The basic question of comparison of fuel mileage is "Is there anything wrong with my car that needs a tuneup or checkup?" AND the BEST way to see that is through HIGHWAY driving (because city driving has too many variables that are very difficult to compare among ourselves)

I got 24-25 mpg as follows:

- Straight drive from Chicago to Omaha, Nebraska 450 miles
- Car good shape (recently new cap/rotor/sp plugs)
- Tires at 35 psi
- Driver (myself only, no cargo)
- Cruising at constant speed of 60-65 mph.
- Auto Transmission
- Winter driving on clear road (no snow)...I think at highway speed, the fuel mileage is the same for winter or summer.
- I am not a heavy footer.

WHAT DOES EVERYONE GET FOR FUEL MILEAGE? THIS IS JUST A SURVEY.

When I had my S70 GLT my gas mileage between FL and NY was consistantly around 29 to 31 with 2 people and luggage via Interstates doing 65 to 75. Your mileage seems kind of low.

I hope you drove in the right lane the whole trip. Cleaning your throttle body will help, check your air filter, and switch to synthetic oil. I got 27 from KC to the twin cities with an empty V70R, which I thought was great, especially when I religiously maintain 10 miles over the speed limit :) I wish we could go faster through Iowa. 65 mph is too low for that state.

65 IS too low here...that's why everyone does 75-80, especially between Iowa City and Des Moines. :-)

Just to throw in my .02, this is with a '98 S70 GLT, 81k miles, running Royal Purple- I get about 23 around town and 28 on the highway.
My record is 31 mpg. This was on a trip from Cedar Rapids to Boston, MA during a stretch somewhere in Ohio/Pennsylvania at night (so no A/C, and I keep within 5 mph of the limit at night.)

Check it again in the summer, and you WILL see a difference. I get 24 during the winter and 28-29 during the summer on a 98 V70 N/A with recently replaced ignition parts. This is cruising at about 65-70 with intermittent passing bursts to 80.

Gasoline is formulated differently for winter driving, and the car naturally uses more fuel due to denser intake air (it's colder), so the mileage will not be as good during the winter. The colder outside ambient temp is, the worse your mileage will be.

On that same drive, I would expect to get between 29 and 31mpg and a little more if it were summer. I have driven from Canton, OH to Charleston, WV on I77 in the summer at about 70mph and had the computer register as high as 33mpg. I would expect that from Chicago to Omaha, one would be driving into/against some wind and the aerodynamics of our 'bricks' would carve a little off the mpg.

Mine is a 2000 S70 GLT/SE light turbo; I use 89 octane gas and underinflate my tires.

6.8-7.5 l/100km (31-34 mpg) highway mixed 90km/h and 110km/h but this is a manual V70 -2000 with the smallest 132 hp engine
The RN engines with variable intake timing (introduced 2000 on V70/S70) runs much cheaper at moderate speed compared to the predecessor. I believe final gear is higher on 2000 and later
The brakes needs regular attention to maintain best possible mileage.
I clean and check the rear brakes once per year and the front once every two years.. Syntethic oil gives a noticeable reduction on short distance driving.
"Energy"-tires and slight overpressure also helps. The three-electrode plugs used on non-turbo RN engines seems to degrade near the end of the 60000 km replacement interval, the plugs are specified for 45000km. So I replace them earlier now.

2000 S70 GLT SE with 67k. Average NY highway mileage is about 19.8, City is about 15. Cleaned Throtle body, wheel alignment done, new brakes, new plugs. No codes.
My wife drives the car, so speed limit is obeyed.
