Limited power when very cold 850 1997

I'm hoping somebody will be able to explain the reason for the strange behavior of my '97 Volvo 850 GLT wagon yesterday morning (3 gallons of gas in the tank, with outside temperature: about 0F / -17C). After starting the car and allowing it to idle for about 3 or 4 minutes, I drove away and noticed that the car seemed to accelerate 'normally' up to about 25mph - 30mph but above that speed no matter how far down I pushed on the accelerator, the car would not accelerate. The engine rpms would not go over about 2krpm. After about 5 minutes of driving I pulled over at a gas station and put the car in neutral and pressed on the accelerator and watched the engine rpms increase to about 3.5krpm. Then I allowed the car to idle for about 2 minutes and shut it off and filled the gas tank with gas. When I started the car again and drove off to the highway, the car accelerated normally and I accelerated up to about 65mph with no problem.
What caused the poor acceleration for the first 10 to 15 minutes of driving?
Thank you!

Check my note to "kivi" frozen gas line thread. Bet it's your intercooler plugging up with condensation and starving the airflow.

    I have a '96 850 Wagon, with Turbo.

After prolonged winter exposure (several days in -20 C) I noticed the same problem. My garage said the turbo intake was clogged with condensation ice. I thaw the car out occasionally and the garage re-routed the intake for the winter (we flip it in the summer).

Didn't your Mother tell you never to drive around with an empty tank during the winter months? :)
I would add a can of Dry Gas, or what ever it is called, to your tank and help get the sludge out of your tank, pump, and filter. Your engine couldn't rev faster because it wasn't getting enough gas. Keep the gas level above 4 gallons during the winter months, preferably full.

      Klaus--
      Thank you!
Today it finally got a little warm out so I tried to start the car a couple of times again.... no luck. Then I took a hair dryer and gently heated the fuel filter for about 10 minutes. When it was warm to the touch, I tried starting the car. It didn't catch the first time, but it caught and ran the second time. Problem solved for now! I have added drygas to prevent re-freezing.
      Thanks again!
