95 850 auto fluid condition question...

ok 854 95 2.5 20 valve, bought 12 months ago with 60k..

when i bought the car I changed the tranny fluid (it was black but didnt smell burnt).

it now was 83k on it (i.e. 23k later) and i pulled some fluid for inspection (syringe and plastic tube down the dip stick) and the fluid now is nowhere near black but is also a little brown - lost that nice flourescent red look.

I do a mix of town driving and long runs...

1. Anyone got any feedback on if this sounds typical
2. At what point to change the fluid
3. ANy other comments...

95 850 auto fluid condition question...

    hi guys

    thanks for the feedback..

actually its been a quiet year for me, sometimes I can rack up 50k in a year....
The driving is mixed, its either to the office (5 miles) or 250 mile runs as a general rule...

the oil was whatever i laid my hands on, certainly wasnt synthetic...and what came out last time (im guessing original fill at 60k) was BLACK

I'm planning on doing a change anyway - might as well its cheap insurance against failure - but just wnted a 'take' on the condition of what was there...

Remember, when following Bay13 procedures, the cooler doesn't get flushed. The color sounds right. You probably do a lot of highway driving to get 23K in one year, which is better than city driving for 10K. Follow Chrissij's advice and get some really good tranny fluid and flush it again. It will make you feel better.

Well you do some driving! Volvo says to inspect the transmission fluid every 20K, and to change only if said inspection warrants it. Said inspection almost always warrants it. Also, what kind of transmission fluid did you use? I was using a brand purchased from our oil supplier...wolf something or other...it was changing brown relatively quickly. I thought my transmission was going bad on my 240 with over 500K; it was a logical assumption. Had my transmission rebuilt...guess what...the fluid was still looking brown quickly. Started using Valvoline Max Life, and 20K later there was still a red tinge. We've been using Valvoline in all of our customers' cars since...and I assure myself that at 500K, my transmission needed a "$500.00 refresher".

    Chris
