Unusual Power loss?? V70-XC70 1998

OK....1st time this ever happened. Got in my 98 V70R AWD wagon tonight after it sat for 10 hours at work. Temperature was 18F which was actually warm for the last 3 days. Car started great as normal...put car in reverse...backed out of spot...put car in drive....and THEN...pressing on the accelerator felt like I was pulling a 20 ton anchor!!!!!!!! The more I pushed the accelerator....it hardly was wanting to move.......smoothly butcrawling. When I got to the parking lot exit about 300feet after moving, I stopped, then went to accelerate....same thing..like I was pulling a 20 ton anchor....yet it just crawled its way after about 10 seconds up to 3000RPM THEN shifted to 2nd gear...WEIRD...then it accelerated just as slow... but now got up to about 25 and was warming up...........by this time I drove about 1/2 mile and it seemed to move better and then I got to the entrance ramp and due to 25MPH traffic I merged on...........by this time the car was 95% warm and now seemed to be fine!!!!! All this time...no bucking...no sputtering and no check engine light!! What the HECK could it be!!!!

    Unusual Power loss?? V70-XC70 1998

Hi, I too have a 98 V70 AWD and beginning last week, mine seemed to be doing something very similar to yours. Were you ever driving a 5 speed car in 5th gear doing about 40 mph and then press the gas pedal? That's what mine feels like! I don't mean mashing the gas pedaL so the turbo kicks in but just gently depressing it. The car feels so sluggish at that point. It also happens at other speeds and sometimes when I'm just starting to move. I asked the dealer to take it for a drive and their mechanic didn't find anything wrong! I'm thinking about asking the mechanic to ride along with me and show him.

I wonder if the dealer will roll his eyes if I suggest cleaning the air mass sensor?

Let me know if you get yours figured out. Thanks!

I experienced exact same thing intermittantly. Air mass sensor was the culprit.

Try cleaning connector also good results from cleaning AMS with cleaner(do off car) Also note Volvospeed note on connector modification to relieve tension.

Check my reply to "frozen gas line" query from "kivi". You may have a plugged intercooler situation, which had me baffled last year. Easing up on the accelerator allows you to creep up to the next gear change but, if you press down too hard, I bet the engine isn't getting enough air to run at higher revs. Short trips in extreme cold, coupled with high-speed travel (air cooling defeats any chance to thaw), aggravates the problem if the intercooler doesn't defrost any built-up ice. Thaw it out thoroughly in a warm garage. Check the drain hole under the rad for blockage too.

      Raf........... V70-XC70 1998

are U saying the intercooler actually may have had Ice in it? Or plugged up by snow possibly! It felt like it was an air intake restriction the way the engine had like nooooooooo power the more you squeezed! I has been fine ever since! Good points........thanks for the insight.

      follow up........... V70-XC70 1998

I do not use my parking brake in the colder weather so that wasn't it! Now this morning it was 10F.....I did start the car and warmed it up 5 minutes before driving off....no issues!!! It was almost like my car was a "drive by wire" car and there was something wrong with the throttle board!! Of course 98's are good ole drive by cable still! This really felt like "limp mode" deal! Would 98's do that? If so...why no check engine light? Now I find myself doubting the cars reliablility!! I only have 117K..........was hoping for 100K MORE!!! Is it time for a Honda?????

The transmission fluid level is at? The transmission fluid condition is typical somewhat viscous hydraulic fluid or water thin? Also, when weather gets colder electrical connections can contract away from their homes, but generally...you get a check engine light in a case like this. I'd check my tranny fluid, and disconnect and reconnect things like the air mass meter connector, and check all the intercooler hose clamps to ensure that they are tight...

Other than that, I dunno...it's hard to diagnose from 30 degree Florida...who said it could get this cold anyway?

    Chris
