... with 57000 miles? An interesting tale! 850

I bought a '95 854 base with 49,000 miles on it over three years ago. It was leased to the same person for two, three-year leases and maintained by Volvo.

We have not had any expenses because we purchased a 4 year, 48,000 mile insurance policy after using this board and Volvospeed.

Good thing too - The car has needed;

Rear main seal, AC evaporator, steering rack, sway bar ends, and a thermostat - about $3000 at a dealer!

I changed fluids and the timing belt (over 84 months old)

Get ANY used Volvo checked out by a knowledgable tech!

I run my potential purchases through Volvo's certification check. It costs me two hours labor (add an hour for a compression check) and I get a two-page report.

About 7 years ago, I looked at an '87 744 Ti -

Price $4500 - Repairs needed $4900!

The mileage seems a bit low for that age. Unless it has only had 1 owner from new it's likely to be wrong. Check the service history very carefully, the first 2 service periods are most likely to be correct so read the mileage at 2 years and mulitply by 5 to get the "real mileage".

To read actual mileage off the ECU on the Volvos with DTC boxes under the hood do this: Since they were notorious for odometer drive gears breaking.

To Determine the mileage on a Volvo 850 if the odometer doesn’t work….

The answer depends on year. For '93-'95 models with the diagnostic ports under the hood near the ECU box, the answer is yes. Follow this procedure:

1. Switch ignition on

2. Connect the fly wire to socket - A7

3. Push button 5 times

4. When LED comes on and stays on, enter code 1-1-1 as follows:
- press the button once when LED is still on
- wait for LED to go out and come on again
- press the button once when LED is still on
- wait for LED to go out and come on again
- press the button once when LED is still on
- read off response, which will be the last three digits of the odometer miles

5. Repeat steps #3-4, but enter code 1-1-2 (that is, press the button twice on the last step); read off the response, which will be the first three digits of the odometer miles. If you have less than 100,000 miles, the first digit will read as 10 blinks.

I can't think of any good reason to pass if the price premium is not too too high, and of course assuming it looks good without obvious abuse. I bought my '95 855 Turbo wagon last January with 59900, and couldn't be happier. I would assume that all of the major maintenance chores will be needed, including flushing everything in sight (brakes, trans, cooling, oil, etc), and also that the T-belt is way overdue on a time basis even though it is not yet up to the "standard" 70k replacement spec. Brake pads are also on teh likely due list. All in all, a great find if you are a DIY'r, and very good even if you do use a mechanic so long so long as you add about $800 to 1000 to price to get it right up to snuff (less whatever you can document as having been recently done). Aftger I got mine and went through it, I have added 14k to it with only one maintenance item showing up (an electrical switch in door lock). Good luck
