1996 850 SC-815 Radio/CD Cuts Out 850

Last week,I purchased a 1996 854 T5 with the SC-815 premium sound cassette and CD. The Radio did not work and I obtained the 4 digit code - after driving with the radio on for 2 hours or so, it asked for the code and after entering it, the radio played fine for hours.Next day after turning the radio on, it played for 5 minutes and then NO SOUND. The radio station still showed in the display, and it can scan to other stations, pause, switch to CD etc but no sound. There is a very slight background sound that is only evident with the volume way up.
I also noticed the antenna did not go up on it's own, and falls back down to 4 inch height easily.
I would like to know if this is something simple, before I consider purchasing a VOLVO Refurb SC-815 at $285. ($300. core charge until old unit returned)
Any suggestions??

Regarding the antenna, probably needs to be replaced. Go to http://www.volvospeed.com/Repair/antmast.htm -good pictoral instructions.

I have an SC-815 Radio/Tape in perfect condition (replaced with an XM aftermarket radio) I'll sell you for $150 plus shipping if you are interested. Came out of my 96 850T...

Forgot to mention--before you replace antenna: the black antenna guide has an O ring at its base. My antenna started to develop problems going up and down and I noticed that when I removed the guide, the antenna worked fine. Went to dealer, got new O ring, fixed problem. Try that before replacing antenna...

        Jack,
I appreciate the quick reply and advice for the antenna guide and O-ring. I will check these and also the connections for the radio/CD. Will keep your SC-815 in mind if it's more than connections.
        Thank You

First, pull the radio out and make sure everything is tightly plugged into the back. Also check the amplifier under the seat and its connections.

      1996 850 SC-815 Radio/CD Cuts Out 850

      Klaus,
At lunch, I lightly rapped the right side of the Radio/CD dash enclosure and the radio sound came on perfect - left-right, fade etc. Then afer a few minutes, went out again, and slight wrap on again. Third time out, no amount of rapping worked, and then after returning from lunch it did come on with a slight wrap but only played for a few minutes????. I will try checking connections - I hope this can be done with unit slid out.
You sure seem to know a lot about these Volvos!
      Thanks
      Bob S

There is a common problem with a circuit board inside the radio. Pull the radio out when it cuts out, and try wiggling the antenna connection, it will usually come back on. I suspect a poor solder connection somewhere in the back of the radio, I have looked into it an it is not easy to get to the board in question, it is behind the heat sinks.

This sounds like a common problem. My son has a 1996 850 with the SC-815 and has the same problem. I used a replacement antenna, instead of the in car antenna. Problem was still there. I built a test cable system, with speakers and power to try to track down the problem, and found it is to intermittent to trace the exact spot on the PC board. The AM radio works fine, so I suspect that it has something to do with FM system only. There is an IC chip, close to the spot with the most effect. I have not figured out why the antenna connection causes the cutting in and out, because it is about 2 inches from the area of sentivity. I will continue to find the probelm, and when I do I will post another message. The radio also has a CD player that does not work. I did find that a motor drive chip is defective, but the part is not available in the US. All the places I checked say that the part is in China, but they don't have any in stock. It is a discontinued part. I may have to buy a defective radio to get that part.

            1996 850 SC-815 Radio/CD Cuts Out 850 1996

This is an update to my last message. I found that the cutting in and out of the radio is related to temperature. If the temperature is warm, the radio works fine. If the temperature is real cold, like zero degrees F. it works fine, but the transistion is where it cuts out. I think I located the the area of sensitivity. It appears to be in the front end module, that is soldered to the PC board near the antenna connector. It is only for the FM part of the radio. The AM part, the cassett, and the CD player are not affected by that issue. As I learn more I will update this.

Is there any update on this problem? I have a 1996 850 wagon (855 GTO) with an
SC-815. This problem just started to happen on my car. The AM and the CD still
works, but the FM is out. Replacing the antenna is not an option as it is
integrated in the glass in one of the rear windows. The AM is noisy, but it has
been that way for a while.

Also, exactly how is the radio removed, so that I can check the connections?

              Thanks.

          Haleakala,
I have been out for a few days but notice that the Radio will always come on after lightly tapping the right side, but it goes back out after 1 or 2 minutes. The power stays on and even the station I.D. stays lit on the digital display, but only light background noise from the speakers. It takes some time before the radio will respond to another tap to the side?? Sometimes the turn-off break is clean and sometimes with a little static. Does this still sound like the antenna or solder connection at the back? It has to be a connection at the radio since the tapping or whack to the side turns it on - I just don't understand why it goes out so soon after only a minute or so.
          Thanks
          Bob Sc

Does anyone have any additional information on this problem. I am sure Volvo knows, since they are offering an exchange SC-815 at the dealers. However, if the problem can be identified, I am sure it may cost a lot less than the $285.00 Volvo exchange price.
