Blower motor relay question... 850

My 94 850 wagon with manual heater controls has a problem. The fan motor only works on highest speed, setting 4. I already checked the fuse for speeds 1-3. There's a relay (#2/24, I think) that turns the blower on high when the lever is set to 4, so it uses the normally open contacts (electricity only flows when the solenoid is energized). The wiring diagram in my Haynes manual is a bit unclear. Are you surprised? I'm not sure if speeds 1-3 go thru the normally closed contacts (electricity flows when soleniod is NOT energized) of that relay or not. Does anyone out there know if that's how it works? Also, do you know the color of the relay or its location? I'm assuming its not in the easy-to-get-to location by the fuses. I haven't yet checked the resistor that controls 1-3. I understand that's behind the glove box which I have not fealt like removing yet.

Any input appreciated.

Thanks,
Ben

yes, it is the resistor... just did it on a '95 850 with the same symptoms. It's not a horrible job, figure 90 mins start to finish. You'll need a flexible drive to remove the old resistor pack. I forget whether it was a philips screw or a hex nut but a straight handle/drive will make it almost impossible to get out. Once you have the glovebox out, it's a little tricky to find but just a couple of fasteners once you do.

I'm sorry. Did I hear you say PHILIPS? That would make way too much sense. You must have meant Torx. A T20 maybe?

So what I'm hearing is speeds 1-3 do not go thru the normally closed contacts on the relay. That's not totally clear in the Haynes manual. If you have one, go to page 12-46. The relay is 2/24. The resistor is 20/18. There are 2 dashed lines coming out of the resistor. One goes thru the NC contacts on the resistor to the fan motor and one bypasses it. What do you think?

Thanks.

Why couldn't Volvo make a quick release glovebox, it's not supposed to be a bomb proof safe - is it?
I am afraid your problem is the resistor. The #4 speed is full 12V and bypasses the resister, that's why the fan works there.
