1998 S70 Starting and Heating Problems...Related? S70 1998

Hi all,

I usually don't post in the FWD forum as I drive a 945, but this is a question I am attempting to answer for my ex-wife (who drives my kids around).

Recently she stated that the radiator cooling fan funs all the time. It runs from the time the car is started under several minutes after it is shut off.

Around the same time this started, the car was difficult to start. It would take several attempts before it would catch.

Finally, the temp gauge only goes half as high as it used to while the cabin never heats up.

Keep in mind that since this has started the temperatures here in the Northeast have ranged from 0F to 30F. The majority of the last couple of weeks has been teens and below.

I am speculating that the thermostat is stuck open and that is causing the low coolant temps/low cabin temps but I was also wondering if there could be an engine coolant temp that is telling the ECU that the engine is already to hot, hence radiator fan running at startup and the hard starting.

Have any of you had a similar problem or have any insight?

It's supposed to be in the 30's this weekend so I was going to change out the thermostat quickly to see if that is the cause of any of the problems.

TIA,
Ian

    Yes,

    1. Thermostat can be stuck open. After 60-70K miles, the Thermostat is no longer reliable.
Replacement is straightforward. The KEY thing here is a long Torx screwdriver:

    http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/tstat.php

I did it without draining the coolant (it was only one year old).
However, this procedure will cause a loss of roughly 1 liter of coolant anyway.

I bought my thermostat from here for approx. $15.00:

    2. RE: Radiator Fan running.
Maybe the sensor is acting up.
This may be the source of battery drain as the fan consumes alot of current.

Look down below the thermostat area along the engine block.
Follow the ECT wire as far as you can see it.
Mice like to chew on volvo wire harnesses.
I have seen a few where the mice chewed on the ECT wire
and caused the fan to run all of the time.

    Good Luck

    Hi Ian,

The short story is, replace both the t-stat and the ECT (reads the coolant temp), and this problem should be solved. Had the same symptoms on my 98 V70 back in Jan 2003.

    You are good S70 1998

The ECU receives a signal from the temp sensor which is next to the thermostat. In your case the thermostat is open all of the time telling the ECU that it is hot.

    Easy fix,

    Klaus

      Thanks Klaus!

Bear with me...by easy fix, do you mean replace the thermostat?

      Thanks,
      Ian

          It was the thermostat.

Replaced it in about 10 minutes and all is right with the world.

          Thanks for the help guys!

I picked up a thermostat this morning and will replace it tomorrow when I go over to get the kids.

Thanks, and I will be sure to post a follow-up.
