WARNING!
Catastrophic spontaneous engine fire occurs in S60s, S80s and V70s with fair regularity. The usual result is total loss of the car. Fortunately, it usually occurs when the engine is off and is most likely due to a defect in the main cooling fan relay. These cases are reported all over the web and it just happened to my daughter-in-law's V70. The car is toast. Volvo at first denied any problem (Ford's influence?), and then recalled some 460,000 cars last September. Don't ignore this problem - the result is a disaster. We are life long Volvo owners and are now reconsidering. All the safety stuff is worthless with a defect like this.

    Dates Manufactured: NOV 1999 to AUG 2001
    Number of Vehicles Affected: 149799
    Date Owners Notified On: Unavailable
    ON CERTAIN PASSENGER AND SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, UNDER CERTAIN OPERATING CONDITIONS, SOME ELECTRIC COOLING FANS MAY OVERHEAT POTENTIALLY CAUSING HEAT DAMAGE AND, IN RARE INSTANCES, A FIRE IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT.
    Consequence of Defect:
    A FIRE IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT COULD OCCUR.
    Corrective Action:
    DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE COOLING FAN. VOLVO HAS NOT YET PROVIDED AN OWNER NOTIFICATION SCHEDULE FOR THIS CAMPAIGN. CUSTOMERS SHOULD CONTACT VOLVO CARS AT 1-800-458-1552.

      I have been asking my dealer monthly about this. they still don't have the parts to fix the problem. There has been no notification on this at all.

    Volvo has a recall on this. Has your DIL had it seviced at a dealer? They should have caught the recall.
