Check Engien error codes (232 & 315) 850

Hello,

I just got two check engine codes off my '95 850T wagon. 2-3-2 (Long-term fuel trim) and 3-1-5 (EVAP). I have noticed that my highway mileage is great (28-30MPG), better than is was last year when I got the car, but my city mileage has dropped from ~22 to 18MPG. I also am starting to notice more idle vibration and roughness. Now that I know what the codes are, the question is how to solve them. I will look into checking the rubber vacuum hosing as suggested by Bay 13, for the 2-3-2 fault, but what about the EVAP code? Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Phil

You will probably fix the EVAP issue by replacing the canister purge valve (code 315 indicates the purge valve is leaking). You can get one for you 95 turbo at www.fcpgroton.com for $75 plus resonable shipping.

I've done approx $800 worth of business with them in two years, and every order has been prompt and hassle free.

Sounds like your on the right track for the 232 code.

Let us know how you do..

I found the site you mentioned and also found a part called a Purge Valve 1994-1995 Turbo Models part# 0280142302. Its from Bosch and costs $75. It this what you are referring too?

Side notes: I cleared the faults and drove about 300 miles with the light remaining OFF. It then came ON for about 100 miles and then went OFF again for about 200 miles, without me resetting it. Its now ON again. I also noted that when I fill the gas tank up (I usually take it down to empty.) It has real trouble starting that first time after the filling. Its like it not getting enough gas or something and coughs for about 15 seconds before becoming smooth. This definitely sounds like some kind of intermittent valve problem.

How difficult is it to replace the purge valve? Special tools? Time for novice. Instruction on Bay 13 or Hayes manual?

Thanks in advance,

Phil

Hi Phil,

That would be the part. As for replacement, I cannot comment, but I would suggest the Haynes manual, and you might also try www.volvospeed.com. I don't recall seeing instructions there, but worth a look and/or a search.

The emmissions required evaporator canister has valves to regulate flow to the manifold and throttle. These valves go bad, but there is a new canister replacement at you dealer for only $250! It is located under the washer fluid container and is easiest to access with the wheel off an on a lift. I chickened out and let my dealer do it. Ask for a discount!
