Turbo Oil Leak S70 - 'Weep Hole,' or B.S.??? S70 1999

My independent mechanic showed me that oil is leaking from my turbo. He also showed me oil being sprayed at the front of the engine, and it sure looks like it is coming from around the intercooler tubes. Because of the cost involved, my mechanic suggested I take it to the Volvo dealer. I bought this S70 2 years ago from this dealer and it still has one month remaining on the Volvo Certified warranty.

The dealer service rep called and said that the warranty company wants to look at the leak before they authorize repairs. That's fine. The service rep also said that all turbos leak, this is because they have a "weep hole" and so oil is always there. I responded by saying my driveway has much more oil on it than could be attributed to a "weep hole." I also reminded him of my note about oild around the intercooler tubes.

I've never heard of a "weep hole" for oil, what do you folks make of this? Thanks.

    Resolved: Turbo Oil Leak S70 - 'Weep Hole,' or B.S.??? S70 1999

Thanks to all who responded. Excellent and informative answers!

The service rep at Don Beyer Volvo in Falls Church, VA just called to tell me the warranty company has agreed to pay for a full turbo replacement!

I have purchased several Volvos from Don Beyer but I seldom use their service department because it is out of the way for me, not to mention very expensive. But they didn't care whether I was a loyal customer, they just went to bat for me and convinced the warranty company to cover the turbo. That's good service.

Again, my thanks to my friends at the Brickboard.

got the same thing from my dealer.
they said all turbos leak, as
evident by the lack of oil remaining
in my oil resevoir when i went to get
it serviced around 75k. they replaced the bushing, an in-line
turbo hose, and oil resevoir cap/screw (which was warped).
didn't cost too much b/c my warranty
covered it. however, no one picked this
up when i had my 70k service.

Yes, there is a "weep hole", but you should seldom see any oil coming from there. Puddles on the driveway indicate something worse. You have a cry, not a weep.

There is a TSB to help the drippng problem. A nipple is installed in the weep hole after drilling it out a bit. This nipple causes the interdooler to retain some oil behind the little dam formed by the nipple. It then blows out on the road and not on the driveway.
