Tipometer is broken 850

On Christmas day I filled my car up with gas and pressed the button on the dash to reset my total trip distance. It reset but then stayed at 0000 after I knew that I was at least two miles away. I tried to press it again but nothing happened. now it is almost two months later and I still do not have it fixed. Is there a way that I can do it myself or do I have to take it into the shop?

Thanks

I just had my speedo replaced at the dealership today. About $445.00 which included replacing the bulbs, as long as they were back there.

Unfortunately, I discovered, only afterwards, that I probably could have done it myself for considerably less.

I ran across an odometer repair "kit" on a Volvo parts site for about $50. Anyone familiar with these? Please don't tell me they work after dropping that cash today. I take comfort by telling myself the dealer did a quality job, only took an hour or two, and if something goes wrong, will take care of it now, Vs. my possibly questionable work.

I have just finished replacing mine. It took about 4 hours to do, but I didn't break anything on the way in or out. The Haynes manual says to take the whole cover off, but I only had to displace the left side to remove the instrument cluster. I bought the gear from someone in Hong Kong through E-bay for $20.00 S & H included, but made of a plastic as opposed to cheap Ford Nylon.

If you want to repair it yourself you can get the replacement drive gear from www.Odometergears.com and the VolvoSpeed instructions to help you get the instrument cluster out of the dash. Total cost would be about $25. The guys makes the little gears in his garage in a special machine. Other than that its a huge bill from the dealer.

Just replaced mine through the dealership....Cost about 700.00 parts and labor.
Some take the dash apart and do it themselfs...I know that i'm not going to attempt that(computer controls and small componets.) So I'm fixed and happy...

There is a plastic gear that breaks in the instrument cluster.
It is a DIY if you have the patience to work with small parts.
Search www.volvospeed.com for the removal instructions for the instrument cluster.
