Any ballpark idea on what to pay for a dealer repair of a leaking rear main seal? I had the flame trap repalced yet it still leaks.

Also, when the seal is replaced any other items that should be addressed at time?

I have just had mine replaced by an independent Volvo dealer (VolvoStop in Pompano Beach) at a cost of $755 including parts. He also replaced the front transmission seal while it was down. Mine started leaking with about 105,000 miles and I kept it going for almost 50,000 miles by gradually increasing the grade of the oil which I was using; started at 10/30, went to 10/40 and ended up at 20/50. I live in Florida so the car could handle the 20/50 OK, I would not recommend this grade to anyone in a cold climate.

Had mine done at 111K for $400. The mech did it on his time in the dealer shop on a Sat.

I just did mine at 86K on a 1998 V70 AWD. It was $1011, 11.3 hours of labor. The axle seals and angle drive unit seals were replaced as well since the tranny had to be pulled.

How do you know if your rear main seal is leaking? What are the symptoms etc., and when can I expect to replace? I am at 100,000 miles.

I have 109,000 miles on the car and it is a 95 850 GTA. The repair shop I went to for regular servicing said it looked like the rear main and said the flame trap if gunked up enough could cause enough pressure on the rear main seal. The dealer I had purchased the car from originally said the leaking of oil where the engine and transmission meet is a good sign of a seal problem. he alsso said it can sometimes be corrected by putting in a clean flame trap.

I had it done for around $500.

who did u people screw to get those prices ? i have been quoted 1200 from everysource. BAUL shait.

I'm looking here because my car's leaking red fluid, and the mechanic just told me he'd have to drop the transmission to replace the rear bearing seal. He quoted 9 hrs and 600.00 to repair. A fair deal. South Texas
