I'm considering getting a nice 850 T5 850 1997

I'm considering getting a nice 850 T5 wagon with 113000 mi. Timing belt has been changed @ 71000. It has a new top engine mount bushing, new front rotors&pads. Exhaust is OK, suspension will need an upgrade before to long, new P6's, super clean in and out no deficiencies. Has service records too. Has a very slight ping under hard acceleration. Needs some premium fuel I think.

Anything outstanding I should check for. It seems like a very good car. Not quite enthusiest level but pretty good.

What's the Transmission service interval with this car?

I've wanted a T5 for some time. I sold the S40 it was too small.

Any input would be great! Thanks

Jimmyg

    Sounds like a good one 850 1997

If you hear a ping, I would question the knock sensors. They usually retard the timing fast enough that most people would never hear it.
Service records! That's required reading and a must have.
I was reading through my IPD catalog today, wishing for warmer weather, and came across a tranny filter. Reasonable price and makes for changing the ATF much easier than it already is. I still use the dino stuff, but will add a filter on my next fluid flush.

Get all of the codes stored in the computer cleared when you have the car checked out. Start from scratch. Leave the tranny switch in S around town and on E on the open highways for the most fun and best milage.

    Have fun,

    Klaus

The "ping" may be the turbo not the need for premium gas as volvos run on regular gas. Most T-5s are standard so check the manual for fluid change interval. If an auto a fluid change should be done every 20K

I beg to differ. The owner's manual suggests premium fuel for all engines for US-spec 850s. Even non-turbos.

I had pinging problems with my non-turbo 850 when I ran 87 AKI fuel. Switching to 89 or higher solved my problems.

A tank of midgrade or higher should solve the pinging problems.

Totally agree, I run only Chevron Plus in my 96 850 turbo--Premium is more Octane than needed at my altitude, 5-7,000 ft. The Volvo you are looking at sounds like a really good car. Note that the tranny (if auto) has no filter so flush evey 20K miles. I use Mobil 1 ATF. Here is a link to the simple procedure:

The volvospeed site is very useful for other maintenance issues.
