Are all 850/70 seats as uncomfortable as my 97? 850

Want to buy another 97 850 or V-70, but after 150 miles in my 97 850 GLT wagon my rear feels like I've been worked over with a two by four. The leather base of the seat is just flat, hard, and not supportive. A friend of my mine who drives a 96 850 wagon with leather seats complains of the same thing. This is such a painful issue that it is really making me rethink buying another 97 850 GLT, one for myself, the other for my wife. I test drove a 97 850R wagon and was impressed with the support of the R-seat, but ten minutes in a seat is not the same as three hours or longer. Can you sit in an R-seat for longer than four hours and not feel like you've been tortured? I think the non-R 98's had the same seats as the 850's, but in 99 did they improve the seats? You can't interchange them with earlier models because of airbag incompatibility, but this doesn't say anything about improved comfort.

Can someone out there please advise me what models from 97 on had the most comfortable seats, one you can sit in for up to eight hours and not feel beaten. It's become a decisive issue for deciding which year and model I want to buy. Dick

I too have a difficult time finding seats that are comfortable. I sat in a new Ford 500 for an hour at the dealership and my back started to hurt.
All of my Volvos seats are excellent. I just finished a RT from Minn to Colo and 16 hours behind the wheel on the home stretch - no back problems, no leg problems.
My seats are leather and soft. I use conditioner on the leather in the spring and fall, lots of it! BTW, I am 6'7" and 225lbs.

I have a 94 850. I drive 90 miles roundtrip to work each day. I am 215 lbs and find my leather seats the most comfortable seats I have ever had.

I found my wife's 95 850 cloth seats are much more comfortable than the leather ones in my 99 v70. You may want to try a volvo with cloth seats.

I just replaced a 93 940 (leather seats) with a 97 850 (cloth). The 940 was very comfortable, but I think the 850 with the cloth (no power, all manual adjustment) is the most comfortable seat and best seating position I've had in a car since my 76 BMW 530i with Recaros! By the way, the 940 met an untimely death sliding off road and hitting boulder smack on the drivers door at 40 mph. My son didn't even have a scratch. Thank goodness for Volvos!!!!!

          Hey Bill 850

          Hey BillVT-

If you're still around what part of Vermont are you from? I'm from Bennington in the southwestern part.

I have a '96 855 and my seats are really comfortable, too. Much more comfortable than other 'luxury' cars I've owned. I'm 5'10 and 165 lbs.

I had a '94 850 with velour seats and those are the most comfortable seats ever! My newer 1998 S70 also has cloth and they are very very comfortable too, a bit firmer than the 850 but not hard or unpleasant - just supportive.

Perhaps it is the leather, have you tried conditioning it to soften it? Or perhaps it is just personal preference.... keep in mind that a very soft surface provides no support for your back and would cause a different type of fatigue.

Anyway you could always buy sheepskin covers or something, I think it would be a bit crazy to choose a car model based on seat cushions!

Sheepskin is known for releiving pressure points - better than any synthetic material - plus it breeathes.

      I have a 1994 850 my wife has a Mercedes 300SE. I can say with certainty that
the volvo's seat are more comfortable than the Mercedes. I have owned, Saabs,
Fords, Chrysler and Chey and the 850 seats are the most comfortable of any car I have ever owned or sat in. I believe it was JD Powers who rated the seats as among the best of any car.

I'm surprised - I think that Volvo seats are the most comfortable seats out there.

I have a '95 850 Turbo. I have the front leather seats covered with sheepskin seat covers. I find the seat more comfortable than many other cars. I sat in a bunch of different makes at the International cars show...there are few as comfortable.

I weigh about 122 lbs. Maybe if you are lots heavier you may have a problem. My husband weighs 185 and he has never complained about any discomfort.

I do find that I feel the bumps in this car. The car is lower than some...I have to watch how close I get to parking blocks otherwise I cause damage. So, I would say the sporty ride may cause a bit more of a rougher feel than the seats themselves. But I still enjoy my car. I wouldn't like it as well if it wasn't at least a turbo and I may have liked the R better.

Cley - where did you get your sheepskin covers if you don't mind me asking? I haven't been able to find any that would go over the headrests on the front seats. Were they expensive?

        Thanks in advance,

I believe I bought them for this place. It has been several years.
I sent back or decided against covers for the head rests.
