850 service overcharge? 850 1996

I'm a 2-7-9 guy, doing a bit of research for my aunt's '96 850T. She's concerned that the dealer is overcharging her for service. Is $941 for a timing belt and 125K service a normal charge? The service guys are now saying she needs $700 in sensors to make the Check Engine light go off. Seems kind of sketchy to me...

Also, does anyone know a decent private Volvo mechanic in Montgomery, AL, that she can go to?

Thanks for any advice.

Get a list of exactly what was done - they owe you that!

If it was timing belt, tensioner, and O2 sensors which I assume it was, that price seems not bad. I was quoted $950 at the dealer for similar work. I went to indie Volvo garage and paid about $650 for timing belt and water pump replacement.

I'd say the devil is in the details - leaving us 2 questions:

    1) For the timing belt service which of the items listed by "Rule 308" as possibly needed were charged for in the bill?

    2) Did the dealer actually do all the work that was billed for?

If these are both true then the bill might be reasonable.

Regarding the sensors - it would be fair if you were told what codes were read so you could know ahead of time what sensors are in question before committing to the work. Some, like oxygen sensors, have limited lives, while others such as a coolant temp or air mass sensor don't fail often. If and when those go it would usually be sudden and you would usually pick up clear symptoms.

I give up, what is a 2-7-9 guy anyhow?

    To give you an idea:

Timing belt alone/ parts and labor $250.00+
    Idler gear, parts only $100.00
    Tensioner pulley, parts only $100.00
    Tensioner, parts only $150.00
125K service, at a dealer $75.00 or so
    Labor for pulley/idler gear, 1 hour $90.00-$100.00

At this point you are at $775.00 before taxes and truthfully they will probably charge you more than the qouted $250.00 for the belt install. Why she is doing it at 125K seems a little odd, but it may very well be warranted depending upon the situation. Now if she was getting a 120K service (major service) and a timing belt, well then the $941.00 is not out of line at all.

    Hope this helps, Mark

Thanks, Mark. "2-7-9" means I'm familiar with the 240, 740, 940 series RWD cars but not the front-drivers, so I know what a timing belt should cost on a 740 but not an 850. Seems like all of my old Volvos seem to have helped convince members of my extended family that they're great cars, and they have more $$$ than I do, so they've gone and bought 850s and S60s and XC90s and then they ask me when they've got questions about 'em! Which is okay, since I have contacts. :) Thanks again!

Oh, I see you are a "red engine" kind of guy. Right on then, a man after my own heart. I work on all of them but you can't help but like those old red engines especially the '85 and later stuff. Sheer unadulterated gravy :) If I can be of any other service feel free to e-mail me or post on this thread.

        Mark

I think my 125k service cost about $20 from my indy Volvo shop. (I supplied the Mobil-1) It's, basically, an oil change.

The timing belts 1994-1998 are usually done at 70k, 140k and 210k. Replace the tensioner and idler pulley at 140k.

Sensors could cost, well ... $700???? It depends. WHO knows??? Anything.
