'97 850 died and will not restart 850 1997

Greetings,
My wife came home from work today and all was well. She took out daughter to church and all was well. She went out again to visit a friend, and got about 200 feet down the road and the car died and would not restart.
The car has spark from the coil, oil is good. I suppect a fuel pump or pump relay. I have searched this message board and see where others have had similar problems and most feel it is the fuel pump or realy. One message talked about shorting around the FP relay to see if the pump is bad. I did not find out how to actually do that test. Does anyone here know? If so, please tell me what to do.
I have checked various parts store web sites and they have pumps avaliable (but would have to order it) Does it matter the manufacturer, or are they about all the same? Is the pump relay only a dealer part?

One gentleman before stipulated that it could be the RPM sensor. I propose a simple test for the pump and relay that does not involve undoing a single screw.

First, try to start the car. If it dosn't start, then we can test it for pump activity.

With the key in position II (Run), turn off the radio and close the windows. Then turn the key to 0 and pull it out. Put the key back in, and turn it to II again, and listen for a mid-range buzz coming from the rear end of the car which turns off after a 3 or 4 seconds.

If the buzz that dissapears is there, go ahead and try to start the car... If it dosn't run, test over. If it does run, you'll need to rerun the test as soon as the car fails to start again.

      '97 850 died and will not restart 850 1997

      Greetings again,
I installed my new in-tank fuel pump today and she started right up!!!! I am so glad that the fuel tank did not have to come out to change the pump. This really was an easy fix, and not hard to trouble shoot. I verified that the fuel pump relay was working, so the only thing that would cause the pump not to run during the 3 to 5 seconds after turning the key, would be a bad pump.

      Thanks for the advice,
      Stuart

My 1994 850 had the fuel pump die last year - driving along at 35 mph and then engine just stopped... eventually got it started again and parked, then drove it to the closest shop (hoping it wouldn't stall again) and a new fuel pump solved it.

Could also be the camm shaft hall affect rotation sensor. This is a somewhat common failure. If I remember correctly the fuel pump won't turn on if the sensor is not picking up any engine rotation. Very easy to replace.
