Banging Sensation felt is gas pedal when coasting to a stop 99 v70 awd V70-XC70 1999

I just purchased a 99 v70 awd with 91k complete with all service records ,at least since 82k when the dealer took it in. I am expierencing a banging noise and feeling it in the gas pedal only when coasting to a stop. Could the bevel gear be going? Any Sugestions. Also are tires rotated front to rear? I have owned several other volvos I hope I didn't make a mistake with the 99 awd . seems like there has been alot of problems with this particular model.Cheers

    Thanks,
Looks like I dodged a bullet this time. I found that the heat shield dropped and was rubbibg on the drive shaft. A .20 fix Is The bevel gear itself expensive or is it all the labor. So far I have been able to do all my own work on volvo's . I got a lot of practise working on the other sweedish car company products.

I hate to say this, but it could be your bevel gear.

Can you also hear the sound outside the car (with the windows down, for example)? When my bevel gear failed it produced a very loud metallic grinding/banging sound that was noticed by pedestrians. It would make a shrill squeal (of ever-increasing volume) followed by a banging/clunking sound which seemed to emanate from under the passenger compartment. The banging would relieve the tension built in the gear, apparently, because you could then drive for about 100 feet with no sound, then the shrill squeal started to build up again. It seemed to bang more when coasting, but not exclusively.

I paid $1,700 to get my bevel gear replaced. This was considered a bargain compared to the $2,300 price I was originally quoted. The discount came when the dealer reported that no bevel gears were available in North America (I have an "early build" 98 XC, which is a relatively scarce breed), and I had to wait a month for a new one to be built!

I hope it turns out to be something else, but prepare for the worst.

    Good luck.
