Loud noise from blower at idle V70-XC70 1998

When I first start the car in the morning or am at a stop light in town, the blower fan(cooling fan?) kicks on that produces a high pitched squeal that is unbearable. Does it need some grease maybe or does it have to be replaced? Other posts I've read suggest it might be a dirty cabin filter, but it is clean. Thanks for any input

sounds like either a failing air pump, or a failing electric radiator fan. If you get it at start-up, with engine cold, probably air pump, since engine cooling fan would not yet be called on. It could be either when you hear it at idle sometimes. Air pum[p is my first guess. Doesn't sound as if you are refering to the heater/Ac fan.

After more investigation, I believe it is a failing air pump. Any way to maybe grease it up or do think it probably needs replacing?

thanks

The bearings are sealed... try moving the speed selector switch to high to help move whatever residual grease exists to other parts of the bearing. Replacement is a pain.

Where is the speed selector located? Near the battery?

THanks for the help.

When you mentioned the pollen filter, I assumed you meant the cabin fan. It's speed is regulated on the dash board.
If you meant an engine fan noise, there are no speed selectors. You will have to open the hood and verify the noise comes from the fan shroud area or the cold air fan under the battery.

yeah, I think its the aux cooling fan behind the radiator. I think I'm just going to squirt a bunch of WD 40 down there.

thanks
