see codes 212 and 153, guarenteed double O2 sensor replacement? 850

Seeing codes 212 and 153 (even did a reset and checked a few days later) on my 95 850T wagon with 141k.
Background:
Dealer confirmed codes but I couldn't get past the sales guy to ask mech questions, said I need to replace both. Can't find records on last O2 sensor replacement. Also my current MPG ~17 in suburb driving with me avoiding going into boost.
153=Rear HO2S signal missing or faulty
212= Front heated O2 sensor(HO2S) signal missing or faulty.
Dealer also said my "rear main engine seal is leaking, at a moderate lev". Pavement under car dosen't look spotty though.
Prev owner hid check light burnout durring sale.

Q: how likely is it that both O2 sensors happen to be dead?

P.S. How can I tell how many liters this engine is? I don't see a stamp anywhare and the manual dosen't tell me. Just wondering because a parts place said they saw a few different entries in his computer, one of those being 5L.

Thanks

    ..........STOP! 850

I have NEVER needed to replace BOTH and I work at a dealer. Odds are good that you really have a bad vacuum hose instead, cheap and easy fix.

You have a 2.3L engine creating about 222bhp :) There are no 5L engines by Volvo.

Your O2 sensors are probably original, they last a while because emmissions gear warranty is longer than 50K miles.

Need worry about cat damage from bad O2's? 850

Thanks Klaus, I was scratching my head when he said 5L because I had never heard anything larger than ~2.4 mentioned with these cars. I just placed an order for two Bosch O2 sensors and will replace them later this week.
      Question:
Do I need to worry about car damage if I drive around this week till I get my new O2's?

Nah, all you wind up doing is running rich. Your cat will clean itself out after the new O2s are in and the codes are 1-1-1. Just don't go to Mexico and get leaded gas! :)

If you want you can try just replacing the front one and make sure you put the adapter harness in with it. Part of the problem they've been having is not only bad sensors but the harness is also failing. The O2 sensors of old had a simple vent right in the back of the sensor so they could get their reference air in that way. The new ones are supposed to draw air in through the harness itself. It is actually supposed to pull it in through the space around the copper wires under the plastic sheathing. The word I got was that the coating on the wires was contaminating the reference air and causing screwy readings so they put in a new sensor and the adapter was supposed to adress the contamination being caused by oil leaks and the like. It could all be smoke and mirrors but the new sensors and adapters do seem to work. The dealership is only really concerned with two things, turning a profit and fixing your car right the first time. You have codes for both, they have an on going problem with O2 sensors, this dictates that you need both and you probably do. If you want to do it yourself then you can take the gamble and stuff just a front in and see what happens. Just remember to get the adapter harness with it as well.

adaptor and CAT question 850 1995

Thanks for the info Mark. Checked FCPGROTON.com and they say the adaptor is only needed for 1997. Have there been problems on my 1995 850 that volvo techs have noticed? Also would driving 45mi/day this week till I get the O2's on friday be extremly bad for the cat/muffler system? I'm noticing the avg MPG go down even more and am worried the computer is increasing the fuel dump.
      Thanks
