Engine compartment rattle on accelleration V70-XC70 1998

My 98 SC has 125K miles on it. Except for the Viscous drive being replaced twice, it has been a wonderful car. In the last few months I have taken it in to the dealer for a rattling sound occuring during the initial phase of light acceleration from a standstill. The dealer diagnosed it as a failing alternator and replaced it. The rattle prevailed. Then he replaced the turbo relief valve and secondary air valve tube. The rattle prevailed. Then he replaced the wheel hub and bearing. The rattle prevailed. I am tired of his replacement style of mechanics. Anyone have a similar problem or idea?

First, dump your dealer. And write him a nasty note. Copy your service bills and send a copy to Volvo Corp of North America, let them know that you cannot get good service from your dealer.
Then, get a helper with good ears. Open the hood, put the car in gear and with your foot firmly on the brake, push on the gas slowly until you hear the rattle. The ear person will probably find a loose heat shield by the cat converter. Let the car cool and remove the heat shield.
