I just bought a 94 850 turbo and the odometer has stpped working. The speedo is still working. I have heard their is a gear between the electric motor and the odometer that is probably broken. Is this gear available and if so, where do I get it. Also how hard is it to replace.

Then look in the FAQs on this site and take a look at BAY 13, there should instructions somewhere in there that will set you straight. Otherwise just use the search feature and you will find volumns of information on the subject. As far as how hard is it? Heck I do them all the time so I think it is a cake walk, but if you do not know Volvos and it is your first one then find a good tutorial and you will be OK for the most part. Make sure that you replace all of the bulbs while you are in there.

I too have a non-functioning odometer. It stopped for about two hundred miles on the way home from picking the car up after purchasing it. It then worked for several thousand miles, but now has stopped for more than 400 hundred miles. I noticed on odometergears.com they have two gears for sale. There is a 15 tooth and a 12 tooth I believe. I don't really have time to take apart the dash and reassemble it only for the sake of seeing which gear needs replaced since the car is in almost constant use. Which gear is most likely the problem? I have heard that one of the gears fails much more frequently, and I would be willing to chance that it is the one I need. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I ordered my gear from odomotergears.com and I talked to Jeff the owner. He said the 15 tooth is usually the first to go out but, it is better to go a head and replace both while you are in there. He also directed me to a web site that has detailed instructions on replaceing the gear. The site is matthewsvolvosite.com and click on 850,s and then 850 repairs.
