I have a 94 850 turbo that is smoking white smoke out of the tailpipe only at idle and deceleration. I took it to my Volvo mechanic and he diagnosed it as 1 of 2 things. 1. valve seals need to be replace $1,ooo bucks or the turbo needs replaceing (worn seals) $ 1,500 bucks. I could not decide if wanted to spend that kind of money on the car or not. I brought the car home and at the advice of a buddy of mine I added a qaurt of STP no smoke additive, I let the car run at idle for about 30 minutes and drove the car around for a while and still no smoke. Does this mean since this stopped the smoke temporarily that it is probably the valve seals that are bad and the additive is just thickening the oil so it is not getting past the valve seals and being burnt and sent out of the tailpipe. I do know the additive is not a permanent fix for the problem.

My 94 855 turbo smoked badly at idle and was the turbo seals. I purchased a used one for $200 and installed it. No more smoke. The turbo was leaking oil badly into the exhaust, in fact it was wet with oil. Not saying this is it, but it was on mine. You can change a turbo yourself just psych yourself up and take slowly.

After taking my volvo 94/850 turbo for electronic diagnosis I 've been told the problem is on PCV-some sensors and seals have to be changed. The problem is the smok coming up between the engine and the turbo, there is also multiple-oil lick. The car has been taken to 4 different mechanics and I got lost in their opinions.Any suggestion -what to do?

If the white smoke smell like coolant, the problem may mean that coolant is leaking inside of the combustion chamber. It can be bad seals, cracked cylinder head, cracket block.
This is not oil, because when its burning oil the smoke should be blue.
If it is black, there is a rich mixture of fuel.

The engine have passages that transport the coolant to take out the heat, when this passages(transporting coolant) inside the engine.
Check the oil deep stick,if you see a milky oil that can be coolant that is leaking inside of the engine. If this is the case, that is a expensive repair.
