'Reduced performance' message on dash V70-XC70 2001

my 01 t5 with 67k miles has twice gone into what my mechanic calls "limp home mode." It slows to a crawl, won't rev over 2500 rpm, and when i park it, it runs very rough and nearly stalls.

both times a "reduced performance" (really!) message appears on my dash. once i got a yellow warning light in the tirangle in the middle of the dash and once i got a red triangle. the manual says call the dealer on yellow, park it immediately on red. the manual says nothing about this reduced performance message.

as you might expect, after it sits a while, everything is fine. when my mechanic uses his diagnostic computer on it, he finds no codes.

i have noticed a very slight hesitation at times, rather like the a/c cutting on and off--mostly at even throttle around 3000 rpm--and i'm wondering if the two conditions are related.

any ideas?

Yeah, sure sounds like an ETM. I had the same thing happen to my 2001 XC, after a week of surging like you described. I had it into the shop before a big trip to the mountains, but like you they couldn't find any codes. I hadn't had the "performance reduced" message yet though.

As you would expect, the thing totally conked out pulling up a long hill out of the Sierras. "Performance Reduced" message, the thing would barely idle in neutral. Being a SW engineer, I "rebooted" the car, and the problem went away for another hour of driving. I made it home in that way, and the dealer was able to pull a code the next day.

I think your ETM has an extended warranty to 70k miles, since they know they had serious problems in that area. If you make enough fuss, they should change it for you, or at least install a "black box" to record what's happening while you're on the road.

Sounds like the throttle body. They have a serious problem with them, many reports of failure.I'm still hoping they will have a recall on them. I spent almost $1000 to have mine replaced at 78000 miles, all the same symptoms.

    Good luck
