S70 1998 hesitation S70

To Bob in Chicago Suburbs - Please reference your May 29 message - have you been able to fix your hesitation/engine stalling problem? If so how did you do it. I have the same thing going on.

Before you get all crazed about throttle bodies, sea foam, sun spots, etc., when was the last time the plugs were replaced in that car? I typically don't get more than about 20k miles before I start to notice rough starting, an occasional engine stumble and a peculiar ringing in my ears. Replacing the plugs fixes two out of the three.

Is your vehicle a T5?....I have been having this problems myself...the shop I use thought they had it fixed but it just occurred again...very intermittent but can be a real problems if you are at a red light and the engine stalls....then yoou have to rev it and getmoving before it stalls again.

It is not a T-5. The dealer says I have bad wires, but they are brand new Volvo wires, etc. I am bringing it to an Indie tomorrow. They also have had no clue in the past over the hesitation, but hopefully now that it is getting worse they may figure it out. Seems to be a lot of this unknown problem with this vintage Volvo.

Let me know what happens...found out another guy I know, former NHTSA employee here in Wash DC area , has had the same problem...same model...same year. I have been to three shops...it is as if they don't want to deal with it because the only surefire way is to replace $$$ thousands of dollars worth of parts and then it may not even be corrected. These 1999 S70s (C70s etc) that NHTSA just opened an investigation on I believe are focusing on electronic throttle control (ETC) However our 1998 models I don't believe have ETC.

1999 was the first year fot the ETC. Did you try cleaning the throttle housing?

The Indie could not find the problem yesterday. In fact it ran fine with no symptoms. This is the forth time I have brought it to a mechanic/dealer and so far nobody can even offer a clue as to what may be wrong. The randomness is the difficulty with any diagnosis. I think something must be loose and is not always out of place. Unfortunately I lack the procedural skills to systematically check everything out and the mechanics are not inclined to spend the time necessary - I guess unless I offer lots of $$.

What I would like is a manual that describes what each sensor and controller does and what are the symtoms of failure. In other words what could possible cause this type problem. Thanks in advance to anybody who can offer up some ideas.
