Radio won't recognize its code 850 1996

My radio won't reactivate after having disconnected the battery and removed the radio during a repair. I'm sure I'm using the right code -- I double-checked it with a dealer. I have tried waiting the 2- hour period and disconnecting the battery again. The radio lights up, asks for the code, and goes into the OFF mode after 3 tries. The radio is the premium model with the cassette and CD built-in.

Anyone have any ideas on what else to try?

    Radio won't recognize its code 850 1996

Thanks to you all for your suggestions. It turned out that the problem was that the radio unit was not the original, which is why the code based on the VIN didn't work. I got the correct code from the local dealer by using the serial # on the radio itself. This would seem to be the obvious solution, but it had not occurred to me that the radio wasn't original. Once again this forum has bailed me out -- what would we do without it?

Check out this question/response link.... http://www.brickboard.com/AWD/volvo-989119.html

NBZ's answer apparently enabled "Blake" to solve the exact same problem. If all else fails, take a look at this link.... http://au.geocities.com/ozbrick850/radio-codes.html
    Good luck.

My car had the radio replaced before I bought it. I was lucky, there was a 4 number code stuck to the top of the radio box, readable after pulling it out. You don't need to disconnect the battery before punching in the new code. You could call the dealer and find out the radio code if the radio is original.

You don't say whether you did the repair or sent it in to a shop. And if the latter, are you certain you got the same radio back and not another? And, are you sure your radio is original to the car and hasn't been replaced? Have you disconnected the battery before and punched in the code and had it work? Dick
